L’AIRO (Associazione Italiana di Ricerca Operativa) è stata fondata il 20 aprile 1961 da un gruppo di Studiosi, Tecnici e Dirigenti Industriali riuniti in rappresentanza di importanti Aziende pubbliche e private, di Istituti Universitari, Enti di Ricerca, Ministeri e ISTAT (è consultabile l’atto di costituzione).

Numerose associazioni nazionali, tra cui l’AIRO, partecipano oggi all’EURO (Association of European Operational Research Societies) fondata nel 1975.

Dal Settembre 2015 l’AIRO ha assunto la rappresentanza del settore disciplinare MAT/09 Ricerca Operativa che precedentemente era rappresentato dal CIRO (Centro Interuniversitario per la Ricerca Operativa).

L’AIRO aderisce inoltre all’IFORS (International Federation of Operational Research Societies) e sviluppa azioni comuni con altre Associazioni Scientifiche Italiane (AICA, AICE, AILOG, AISRE, AMASES, ANIPLA, SIMAI, UMI).Oggi l’AIRO consta di circa 300 soci individuali e di alcuni  soci collettivi: imprese, enti e dipartimenti universitari.

4OR è la rivista ufficiale dell’Associazione, pubblicata assieme alle Associazioni Nazionali di Ricerca Operativa belga e francese. Inoltre, la serie AIRO-Springer Series pubblica contributi risultanti da eventi ed attività organizzate dall’AIRO.
